History of Bayer 04 Leverkusen football club
Bayer 04 Leverkusen, often known simply as Bayer Leverkusen, is a German professional football club with a rich history rooted in its connection to the Bayer pharmaceutical company. Origins and Early Years, The club's history began on July 1, 1904, when it was founded as a gymnastics and sports club for employees of the Friedrich Bayer and Co. company. The football department was officially formed a few years later, in 1907. The club's name, and its nickname "Die Werkself" (The Factory Team), directly reflects its origins as a works team. For decades, the club played in the lower divisions of German football. In 1936, the team first wore the "Bayer" cross logo, which has been a staple of their kits ever since. They made their debut in Germany's top-flight football in 1951, but were relegated soon after. Rise to Prominence and Major Trophies. Bayer Leverkusen's fortunes began to change in the late 1970s. They earned promotion to the Bundesliga in 1979, where they have remained ever since. The 1980s and 1990s marked a significant period of growth for the club, as they became an established presence in the top tier of German football. Their first major honor came in 1988 with a remarkable victory in the UEFA Cup (now the UEFA Europa League). After losing the first leg of the final 3-0 to Espanyol, they rallied to win the second leg by the same score, and ultimately won the title on penalties. In 1993, they secured their first domestic trophy, the DFB-Pokal. The "Neverkusen" Era and Recent Success Bayer Leverkusen became known as "Neverkusen" in the late 1990s and early 2000s due to a series of agonizing near-misses. They finished as runners-up in the Bundesliga five times between 1997 and 2011. The 2001-2002 season was particularly heartbreaking, as they finished second in the Bundesliga, were runners-up in the DFB-Pokal, and lost the UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid. However, the 2023-2024 season under coach Xabi Alonso marked a historic turning point. Bayer Leverkusen won their first-ever Bundesliga title, completing the season unbeaten, a feat never before achieved in German top-flight football. They also secured their second DFB-Pokal title that season.
