History of LayerZero coin
LayerZero ($ZRO) is the native
governance token of the LayerZero protocol, an Omnichain Interoperability
Protocol designed to connect disparate blockchains. The token itself has a
more recent history compared to the LayerZero protocol's development. Timeline of LayerZero and the $ZRO Coin The history of the LayerZero coin ($ZRO) is closely tied to
the foundational work of LayerZero Labs. 2021: LayerZero Labs is
Founded LayerZero Labs was co-founded by Bryan Pellegrino (CEO), Ryan
Zarick (CTO), and Caleb Banister in Vancouver, Canada, in 2021. The
protocol was created to solve the challenge of blockchain interoperability,
aiming to enable seamless, trustless, and secure communication (message
passing) between different blockchains. Early funding rounds secured
significant investment from major venture capital firms. 2021 - 2023:
Protocol Growth and Funding The LayerZero protocol itself was actively
developed and launched, integrating with dozens of major blockchains and
facilitating billions of dollars in asset transfers through its network. Key
components, like the Ultra Light Nodes (ULNs) which use decentralized
Oracles (like Chainlink or Band Protocol) and Relayers, were deployed to ensure
secure cross-chain communication. The LayerZero team confirmed their intention
to launch a native governance token ($ZRO) in late 2023 after months of
community speculation. June 2024: $ZRO Token Launch Token Generation
Event (TGE): The official launch of the $ZRO token occurred on June 20,
2024. Airdrop: The LayerZero Foundation initiated a major airdrop,
distributing an initial portion of the $ZRO token supply (85 million tokens out
of a total fixed supply of 1 billion) to eligible users and participants who
interacted with the protocol before the snapshot date (May 1, 2024). Exchange
Listings: The $ZRO token was immediately listed on multiple major
cryptocurrency exchanges, allowing for public trading. The initial launch price
was approximately $4.09. Post-Launch (2024 - Present): Governance and
Vesting The $ZRO token is designed as the native governance token,
allowing holders to vote on key proposals and the future development of the
LayerZero protocol. Following the launch, the token supply began a structured
vesting and unlock schedule, where tokens allocated to the team, strategic
partners, and investors are released over time. These unlocks are significant
events that impact the circulating supply and market dynamics. Purpose of the $ZRO Coin
The $ZRO coin's primary utility is centered on the governance and future
decentralization of the LayerZero protocol: Governance: $ZRO holders are
given the power to participate in the governance of the LayerZero protocol,
influencing key decisions and the direction of the omnichain messaging layer. Protocol
Ownership: The launch of $ZRO marks the transition of the core protocol
into a community-owned, immutable piece of infrastructure.
