History of Ondo Coin
The "Ondo coin" refers to ONDO,
the native governance token of Ondo Finance. The history of this token
and the platform it supports is centered on bridging traditional finance
(TradFi) with decentralized finance (DeFi) through the tokenization of
real-world assets (RWAs). Here is a brief history and overview: The Founding of Ondo Finance Launch: Ondo Finance was co-founded in March 2021
by Nathan Allman (a former Goldman Sachs employee) and Pinku Suran. Mission:
The core goal was to make institutional-grade financial products, traditionally
reserved for large institutions, accessible to a broader audience on the
blockchain, focusing on mitigated risk and compliant services. Early Development and Products The platform initially focused on a permissionless protocol
for creating risk-isolated, fixed-yield loans backed by yield-generating
crypto assets. Key Products: Ondo Finance is best known for its
tokenized Real-World Assets (RWAs), such as: OUSG: A tokenized
representation of short-term U.S. government securities. USDY: The U.S.
Dollar Yield Token, a yield-bearing stablecoin alternative backed by short-term
U.S. Treasuries and bank deposits. Flux Finance: Ondo initially
developed this decentralized lending protocol (a fork of Compound V2) which is
now governed by the Ondo DAO. The
ONDO Token Pre-sale and Initial Lockup:
The ONDO token was sold to over 18,000 individuals in mid-2022. The
tokens were initially locked. Token Unlock and Launch: Following a vote
by the Ondo Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), the ONDO token was
enabled for transfer and publicly listed on exchanges in January 2024.
Its public launch significantly increased its visibility and liquidity. Role/Utility:
ONDO's primary function is as the governance token for the Ondo DAO.
Holders of ONDO can vote on key decisions and proposals related to the Ondo
ecosystem, particularly the Flux Finance protocol. Recent Milestones (2024-2025) Ondo Finance has been a leading player in the RWA
tokenization space, forming strategic partnerships and expanding its offerings.
The company has an asset management arm (creating tokenized products) and a
technology arm (developing DeFi protocols). Recent expansion has included the
launch of Ondo Global Markets and the development of Ondo Chain,
a Layer 1 blockchain specifically designed for institutional-grade RWAs, as the
project continues to focus on bringing traditional capital markets on-chain. In
short, the history of the ONDO coin is the history of Ondo Finance,
which began in 2021 with the mission to build the infrastructure for compliant,
institutional-grade Real-World Assets on the blockchain, culminating in the
public launch of its governance token, ONDO, in early 2024.
