founding mission of financial inclusion and its evolution from anindependent Layer 1 blockchain to an Ethereum Layer 2 solution. Here is a
timeline of key milestones: Inception and Early Development (2017 - 2019) 2017: Celo was co-founded by Rene Reinsberg, Marek
Olszewski, and Sep Kamvar with the goal of building a mobile-first
blockchain platform to provide financial tools to anyone with a basic smartphone.
2018: The Celo white paper was released, outlining the vision for a
mobile-first blockchain, its stability protocol, and the native tokens. 2019:
The Celo Foundation was established to oversee the development and
growth of the ecosystem. Mainnet Launch and Layer 1 Era (2020 - 2023) April 2020 (Earth Day): The Celo Mainnet
officially launched as an energy-efficient, low-cost Layer 1 blockchain. This
date reflects the platform's commitment to sustainability (it is designed to be
carbon-negative). Celo utilized a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus
mechanism (Byzantine Fault Tolerant - BFT). Key features were introduced,
including the ability to use phone numbers to map to wallet addresses

passed an indicative governance proposal to pursue the L2 migration. cLabs
proposed adopting the OP Stack (from Optimism) for the migration. The Dango
L2 Celo Testnet was launched in July 2024 to allow developers to prepare. March
2025: Celo completed its transition to an Ethereum Layer 2 network,
