History of the Rocket pool coin
The history of the Rocket Pool
(RPL) coin is closely tied to the development of the Ethereum
Proof-of-Stake network, as Rocket Pool is one of the most prominent
decentralized liquid staking protocols on Ethereum. Here is a timeline of its
key historical points: The Early
Idea (Late 2016) Conception: Work on Rocket
Pool began in late 2016, following the release of Vitalik Buterin's
"Mauve paper," which provided an early specification for Ethereum's
new Proof-of-Stake consensus protocol (Casper). Goal: The initial vision
was to create a staking solution that would allow users to pool their Ether and
earn interest, lowering the barrier to entry from the native 32 ETH
requirement. RPL Token Launch & Protocol Development Project Founding: Rocket Pool was officially founded
in May 2017. Initial Token Launch: The original RPL token was
launched in February 2021 (some sources indicate a launch as early as
2018, but the 2021 date is closer to the final product launch).Token
Migration: In November 2021, a new Rocket Pool protocol token was
released, and the old token was migrated to the new address. Mainnet Launch & Growth (Late 2021) Official Mainnet Launch: The Rocket Pool protocol
officially launched on the Ethereum mainnet in October/November 2021,
coinciding with the development of the Ethereum 2.0 (Beacon Chain) Core
Feature: This launch introduced the core mechanism of Rocket Pool: Mini-pools
(allowing node operators to stake with less ETH) and the rETH liquid staking
token (allowing stakers to maintain liquidity). Major Upgrades and Milestones The Merge Integration: Rocket Pool successfully
integrated with Ethereum's transition to Proof-of-Stake (The Merge), leading to
upgrades like the Redstone Update to handle post-Merge changes (like new
rewards and the Smoothing Pool). Decentralization Focus: The protocol
has consistently prioritized decentralization, featuring two governance bodies:
the Protocol DAO (to fund development) and the Oracle DAO (a
special group of node operators for administrative duties). Scaling and
Accessibility: Subsequent major updates, like the proposed Saturn
upgrade, focused on further lowering the capital requirements for node
operators (e.g., introducing 4 ETH validators) to democratize staking even
more. Rocket Pool (RPL) Token Utility The RPL token's utility has remained central to the
protocol's function: Node Operator Collateral: Node operators are
required to stake RPL alongside their ETH. This RPL acts as
collateral/insurance, which can be partially sold off to compensate stakers if
the node is penalized (slashed) for poor performance. Governance: RPL
holders have the right to participate in the governance of the Rocket Pool
platform through voting on proposals and decisions. Rewards: A
significant portion (70% initially) of the 5% annual RPL inflation is allocated
as rewards to node operators staking RPL as insurance collateral. In summary,
Rocket Pool's history is one of pioneering decentralized liquid staking on
Ethereum, continuously evolving its protocol to lower entry barriers and
maximize decentralization.
