History of STORJ Coin
Storj is a decentralized cloud
storage platform, and the STORJ coin is its native utility token used
for payments within the network. Here is a timeline of its key historical
moments: Inception and Early Years
(2014-2016 2014: Founding and Whitepaper The project was conceptualized by Shawn Wilkinson
and John Quinn in 2014. Wilkinson, a software developer, aimed to
leverage blockchain technology to create a decentralized cloud storage network.
The first whitepaper detailing the concept of a peer-to-peer (P2P) encrypted
cloud storage platform was published in December 2014.The First Coin
(SJCX) The very first version of the Storj cryptocurrency was called Storjcoin
X (SJCX), and it was initially issued on the Counterparty platform, which
is built on the Bitcoin blockchain. 2016: Company Establishment Storj
Labs Inc. was founded to build out the core infrastructure of the network. Transition and Token Sale (2017) Migration to Ethereum In 2017, the Storj team
migrated the platform and its token to the Ethereum blockchain,
converting it to an ERC-20 token. The new token was named STORJ. SJCX
holders were able to exchange their old tokens for the new STORJ tokens on a
1:1 basis. Initial Coin Offering (ICO) Storj Labs conducted a public
token sale (ICO) for the new STORJ coin, raising approximately $30
million in May 2017. Network
Development and Launch (2018-Present)
2018: Platform Launch The Storj network protocol, which connects users
who need storage (clients/renters) with those who provide it (Storage
Nodes/farmers), was officially launched in late 2018. 2019: V3
(Varda) Upgrade The newest major version of the Storj protocol, V3
(codenamed Varda), was launched in mid-2019, bringing significant
improvements to security, performance, and decentralization. This version
introduced the current three-component architecture: Uplinks (client
software), Storage Nodes (the providers), and Satellites
(coordinators and payment handlers). Ongoing Development Storj continues
to develop its decentralized cloud storage service (Storj DCS) and has focused
on enterprise compatibility, notably by making its service Amazon
S3-compatible, which allows standard cloud applications to integrate
easily. In essence, Storj started as a pioneering idea in 2014, successfully
transitioned to the Ethereum network in 2017 to launch the STORJ coin,
and has since matured into a functional, decentralized alternative to
traditional cloud storage providers like Amazon S3 and Google Cloud.
