Crystal Palace Football Club
Crystal Palace Football Club is a professional football club based in Selhurst, South London, England. While the club was formally established in 1905, it has a history that stretches back to an amateur team founded in 1861. The Origins: 1861-1905 The original Crystal Palace football team was an amateur side, founded by cricketers from the Crystal Palace Cricket Club. This team was one of the founding members of the Football Association (FA) in 1863 and competed in the very first FA Cup competition in 1871-72, reaching the semi-finals. However, this club eventually disbanded around 1875. In the late 19th century, the Crystal Palace Company, which owned the famous Crystal Palace exhibition building and its grounds, sought new attractions to draw visitors. As the FA Cup final was now being held at the stadium within the grounds, the company decided to form a new, professional football club. The Professional Era: 1905-Present Foundation and Early Years (1905-1920): The professional Crystal Palace Football Club was officially formed on September 10, 1905. The club joined the Southern League Second Division and quickly gained promotion in their inaugural season. They played their home matches at the FA Cup final stadium until 1915, when the outbreak of World War I forced them to move. Moving to Selhurst Park and the Football League (1920-1970s): Crystal Palace became a founding member of the new Football League Third Division in 1920 and won the title in their first season. In 1924, they moved to their current home, Selhurst Park. The club spent the next several decades in the lower divisions of English football, with their first promotion to the top flight coming in 1969. The Yo-Yo Years and Financial Struggles (1970s-2010s): The period from the 1970s to the 2010s was marked by frequent promotions and relegations between the top two tiers of English football. The club earned the nickname "The Eagles" in the mid-1970s, replacing their previous moniker, "The Glaziers." This era also saw significant financial struggles and multiple changes in ownership. Establishment in the Premier League (2013-Present): In 2013, Crystal Palace won the Championship play-off final to return to the Premier League. Since then, the club has established itself as a regular in the top flight, enjoying its longest-ever spell in the Premier League.
