History of Jupiler Pro League
The Belgian Pro League, currently known as the
Jupiler Pro League for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier professional
football competition in Belgium. Its history
dates back to 1895, making it one of the oldest football leagues in Europe.
Here's a brief overview of its history: Foundation
and Early Years (1895-1914): The competition
was founded in 1895 by the Royal Belgian Football Association. The inaugural season in 1895-96 featured seven teams, with FC LiΓ©geois becoming the first-ever champion.
The early titles were dominated by FC LiΓ©geois and RC de Bruxelles. Over time,
the league format changed, with different numbers of teams and playoff
structures. A system of promotion and relegation was
introduced in 1906. Post-World War I to Present: The league has continued to evolve over the decades, with
changes to its name, format, and the number of competing teams. The
current "Pro League" name and playoff system were introduced more
recently. Most Successful Clubs: Throughout its
long history, 16 clubs have been crowned champions of Belgium. The most successful club is RSC Anderlecht, which holds the
record for the most titles. Other historically
dominant clubs include Club Brugge, Union Saint-Gilloise, and Standard Liège.
