The history of Celtic Football Club
Celtic Football Club is a
professional football team based in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1887, the club has a rich
history marked by both domestic dominance and a legendary European triumph. Founding and Early Years Celtic FC was formally
constituted on November 6, 1887, by Irish Marist Brother Walfrid at a meeting
in St. Mary's church hall in Glasgow's East End.
The primary purpose of the club was to alleviate poverty by raising money for
Walfrid's charity, the "Poor Children's Dinner Table." The name
"Celtic" was chosen to reflect the club's Irish and Scottish roots. The
club played its first official match against its future rival, Rangers, in May
1888, winning 5-2. This match marked the beginning of what would become one of
football's most intense rivalries, known as the "Old Firm." Celtic
quickly established itself as a major force in Scottish football, winning six
consecutive league titles in the first decade of the 20th century. The Lisbon Lions and Jock Stein The club's most celebrated era came in the 1960s and 1970s
under the management of the legendary Jock Stein. In the 1966-67 season, Celtic
achieved an unprecedented feat by winning every competition they entered,
including the Scottish League, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup, and the
European Cup. They became the first British team to win the European Cup,
defeating Inter Milan 2-1 in the final in Lisbon. The team from that season, a
side composed entirely of players born within a 30-mile radius of Glasgow, is
famously known as "The Lisbon Lions." Major Trophies and Records
