The history of A.C. Milan
A.C. Milan, or Associazione Calcio
Milan, is a professional football club based in Milan, Italy. Known as the
Rossoneri ("Red and Blacks") for their distinctive red-and-black
striped jerseys, the club has a rich history and is one of the most successful
in the world. Foundation and Early Years, Founded in 1899: The club was founded on December 16, 1899, by
English expatriates, including Herbert Kilpin, who famously declared, "We
will be a team of devils. Our colors will be red like fire and black to invoke
fear in our opponents!"
The original name was Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club. First Italian
Championship: Just two years after its formation, Milan won its first
Italian championship in 1901, breaking Genoa's winning streak. They went on to
win two more in 1906 and 1907. The Rivalry Begins: A split in the club
in 1908, due to disagreements over the signing of foreign players, led to the
formation of their city rivals, F.C. Internazionale (Inter Milan). The matches
between the two are now known as the "Derby della Madonnina." Return to Glory and International Success. Post-World War II Era: After a period without a
domestic title, Milan returned to prominence in the 1950s with the help of the
famous Swedish trio Gre-No-Li (Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl, and Nils Liedholm).
They won four Serie A titles in that decade. First European Cup: Milan won
its first major international trophy, the European Cup (now the Champions
League), in 1963, beating Benfica in the final. They would win it again in
1969. The Berlusconi Era: The modern golden age of the club began in
1986 when Silvio Berlusconi purchased the team. Under his ownership and with
legendary coaches like Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello, Milan dominated both
Italian and European football. The club won multiple Serie A titles and a
number of European Cups, including back-to-back victories in 1989 and 1990.
This era featured some of the club's most iconic players, such as Marco van
Basten, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Franco Baresi, and Paolo Maldini.
